Rendering reality.
I'm rebuilding the way Microsoft Office draws documents, for the browser, down to the pixel. This is where I write down what I find.

How close to Office
- All formats 89.3
- Word 86.1
- PowerPoint 92.4
- Excel 89.5
Kamali Suite against ONLYOFFICE and Apryse, with the same fonts
Comparing renderers only means something when they draw with the same fonts. Here's what happened when I gave them all exactly the same files.
Microsoft's own spec for 3-D lighting is turned 90 degrees
Office's specification lists exactly where its 3-D lights point. Draw them as written and the highlights land in the wrong place. Turn them a quarter turn and everything matches.
Thousands of real files, one score
How I measure whether the renderer really looks like Office. Office's own PDFs as the reference, a Windows PC doing the exports, and a score for every file. Tonight it's at 89.3.
About
I like problems where the answer is a number, and the number is wrong.
I'm Monirith. I build software, and these days most of my time goes into getting a browser to draw Word, PowerPoint and Excel files exactly like Office does. SmartArt, charts, text layout, PDF export, all of it.
I test everything against thousands of real documents, because Office has a lot of rules nobody ever wrote down. When I find one, it ends up here.
